I love their chunky sterling silver necklace designs dripping with hearts and large toggle clasps. Their creations are so classic and elegant that I get a lot of wear out of them - and this is how I justify the ridiculously expensive prices. Yes, I do realize that I'm paying for a brand but I don't care!

A year and a half ago I treated myself to a gorgeous sterling silver heart necklace and a charm bracelet as a treat for my birthday. I promised myself at the time that I would buy myself a charm to celebrate special moments and momentous achievements - but I'm embarrassed to say I forgot. I delved into running my own business and designing my own jewelry line, and consequently my gorgeous new charm braclet lay...charmless and unused. I have focused on making gorgeous creations in my studio but I never get to keep them. They all go out the door to someone else.

It's my boyfriends birthday in a few days so I popped over to Yorkdale mall to buy him a gift. On my way there I picked up this gorgeous new charm from Tiffany. I've been working so hard this year and I spend so much of my time designing things for other people, it's time to give myself a treat to acknowledge my accomplishments. I want something that I don't have to lift a finger to create.

When I was a little girl I had an old teddy bear I carried around with me EVERYWHERE. It was such a comfort for me to drag around. I still have him - he's old, full of holes and his head lolls to the side, but now he reclines in a special corner of my room in peace and quiet. I figured carrying THIS bear around is a bit more dignified.

What do you think of my newest charm?

MeghanThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03503324006495248727noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474089778782141887.post-16463927148912362692009-08-20T16:37:00.000-07:002009-08-20T16:52:27.096-07:00Maui
Meet Maui! Grenada is a constant source of inspiration for me so I turned to a picture I took on vacation of a Flamboyant flower and used this as my color palette. I love the bright orange, yellow, and reds in the flower you see on your left. I wanted to be able to wear it on my finger - and hence my "Framboyant Flower Ring" was born.

This large embellished ring, inspired by Grenada's Flamboyant Flower, is just bursting with vibrancy and color. Tonnes of finely wrapped Swarovski crystals explode in a radial of orange yellow and red - offset by blackened sterling silver forming a hot, smoldering coal type effect. It's like peering into a fire pit when you have this little beauty shimmering on your finger. It conjures up memories of sultry Caribbean nights, the heady perfume of tropical flowers, and a mesmerizing fire on the beach.

The ring is designed to worship movement. The Swarovski charms spill from side to side as your hands stir, only halting when you do. The overall shape is constantly in flux and playing around with this ring on your finger gets addictive.

I intend to expand upon the concept of rings with movement more in the future. Stay tuned for new designs! It's as if someone struck a match and decided to light up the heavens. Like a bonfire, deep reds, oranges, and pinks lick across the sky, until darkness descends and mutes everything with a cool inky blackness. No sunset is ever the same, and we’re constantly amazed at the majesty of nature. Who needs a painting in your home, when you can walk out onto your balcony, and be stunned anew each and every evening. I have been on a beach theme lately, and I wanted to try to capture the essence of Grenada's sunsets just before darkness descends. I believe these earrings do Grenada justice, don’t you think?

These stunning luxurious crystals have been painstakingly wire wrapped in oxidized sterling silver, and hung from thick sterling silver rings. I utilized a decent amount of silver in this creation, so these Sunset earrings have a nice weight to them, and feel good in the palm of your hand. It's an adorable little tranquil resort on the island of Grenada. I've watched it change over the years and grow into something incredible. The staff are old friends, the gardens are always so inspiring, and the color makes me want to drop to the grass with a sketch book and start designing. I love going down to the beach for a swim, sheltering under the tiki style hut by the water, or grilling home made burgers on the conviniently located bbq.

Do you know the manager, Tim Brathwaite? Well I recently came across this video online and nearly died laughing. He's been increasing L.A.E Cottages web presence and I couldn't resist sharing this with you. Want to see what's cooking? I have a list of purses I intend to buy during the course of my lifetime (when I become famous of course). My friends think I'm crazy but I don't care. For now I am content with my little Louis Vuitton clutch that my boyfriend bought me (out of pity) several years ago. Every now and then I take it out of its box, admire it fondly, and then squirrel it away for special occasions.

As soon as I looked at these seeds I knew something was familiar about them. It didn't take me long to figure out that they reminded me a lot of one of my favorite red handbags: the Louis Vuitton Alma GM (a classic of the house). It's a gorgeous large monogrammed vernis leather purse and it's form is perfectly echoed in these lustrous red seeds.

These seeds are very special. This variety come specifically from Grenada (the Spice Isle) and were hand gathered by a lovely local resident. I pick a small supply up when I visit each year in December. I hand drilled them in my studio, polished them with special oil, and then suspend the gems on 14k gold filled rings. Simple, understated and elegant! Luxury straight from the Island of Spice (Grenada).

Enjoy!MeghanThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03503324006495248727noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474089778782141887.post-88838076345496997162009-07-08T18:42:00.001-07:002009-07-08T18:51:06.115-07:00Explorer

Fresh from my studio! Here are my new "Explorer Earrings". I wanted to design something that captured my sense of restless adventure. I was wishing I was away traveling in some distant location, but after some self reflection I decided that there is adventure to be had in every day life; even if I'm stuck at home toiling away (albeit joyously) in my studio. It all depends on your attitude and point of view.

I am really please with how these turned out. I think they are perfect for the new tribal chic trend. This necklace is named after Paradise Plums – locally made balls of hard candy consisting of copious amounts of sugar and essence. They’re an eye catching bright red and yellow color, reportedly walking a fine line between sweet and eye wateringly sour. My Grandmother says when she thinks about them her mouth puckers up. For some reason they haven't been on shelves in Grenada for a long while. I’ll have to see if I can ferret some out when I’m next on vacation! They don’t sound like something I’d want to chew on, but they’d make funny treats to leave out for unsuspecting guests.

This colorful fringe necklace features a whole rainbow of eye catching tagua nut (vegetable ivory) slivers and ornate bali beads. Well, actually, the hotel is called Lazy Lagoon and the bar is called the Horni Baboon, but I didn’t think that would be an appropriate name for these earrings! Local people use these names interchangeably to refer to the bar so it’s not a big deal.

If you’re ever in Grenada on vacation you really should check out this hangout. They’ve undergone renovations recently so they can handle bigger crowds. You’ll feel right at home in this club paradise, tiki bar like complex. Get a lift to Grand Anse Beach instead and take a dip there at one of Grenada’s most famous beaches!)

Enjoy!

(these earrings can be viewed on my website at: www.MeghanT.etsy.com )MeghanThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03503324006495248727noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474089778782141887.post-22555092306128830552009-06-30T15:55:00.000-07:002009-06-30T16:29:14.668-07:00Jewels in unexpected places
I am constantly on the lookout for new material to work with. I am attracted to anything new, unusual and colorful and I am always amazed at what I unearth on my travels. Recently I stumbled across the most amazing beetle wings. Their jewel toned color took my breath away and I find it hard to believe that something so spectacular exists like this is nature.

I am releasing a whole beetle wing series of earrings and will be expanding on this design theme over the next few months. I have been working on these wings in my studio; polishing them up and shaping them so I can use them in some of my earring designs. So far the feedback I've had from customers has been really positive.

Every time I look at these gorgeous wings I conjure up something new I'd like to do with them. I keep all my wings in a little golden treasure box on my desk until I'm ready to work with them. When an idea strikes I look for a matched pair and away I go!

These earrings (see image on left) are themed after Grenada's Grand Etang rainforest. They remind me of leaves, shimering in the sunlight after a rainstorm. I wire wrapped a citrine gemstone and positioned it so it's appears to be dripping off the tip of these wings, like a bead of water quivering on the end of a leaf. They're gorgeous in person and guaranteed to get you attention. These are featured on my etsy shop (www.MeghanT.etsy.com). I will be designing more beetle winged themed creations so keep checking back at my shop!MeghanThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03503324006495248727noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474089778782141887.post-78384800002113320642008-10-28T12:03:00.001-07:002008-10-28T12:52:20.886-07:00Water Child - Exploring the irresistible pull

There is something I find utterly irresistible about water. It features prominently in a lot of my designs, the staging of my jewellery, and as a person I find myself lured by it. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what is is about water that I find so captivating, but there are definitely powerful forces at work!

I am a very sensitive person, who is very in tune with her environment. Early on in my life I discovered that water has a certain energy to it. My favorite place to be was in the middle of Lance Aux Epines bay in Grenada, on a small kayak. I'd paddle out far enough away from land to feel utterly surrounded. The thrilling surge of energy I'd get from being out at sea is what kept me going back, again and again. It's hard to hold on to petty problems and concerns, when you're being saturated by something so inspiring.

When I moved back to Canada from Grenada, I immediately had to get a fish tank. I live in a city now and instead of the sprawling beaches I was used to, I have had to contend with acres of concrete. Not so enriching for the soul! Nothing compares to the untamed majesty of Grenada's salty beaches though.

I believe in doing what feels right, and making choices that nurture your soul. This is why I have taken a bit of an aquatic turn with my jewellery design. Most people are starting to get a feel for my style and can see that Caribbean themes and materials are constantly popping up in my designs. Certain choice jewellery items that I am working on seem to come alive when I add a little water at the photo shoot, so I am running with this, and listening to my intuition.

My latest creation (seen to your left) draws inspiration from Aquarium Beach. We frequent this beach to snorkel because a short swim off shore are some wonderful coral reefs, just begging to be explored. It's a perfect location, great for photography enthusiasts. I've taken some of my best photographs of the island from this beach, and I intend to go back to stage some of my jewellery at this hot spot.

There is a restaurant (which hosts amazing parties) along this beach called...what else...Aquarium! The owners are wonderful, and often times we'd walk into the bar after a swim and enjoy a delicious tropical beverage. Aquarium also happens to be one of my favorite restaurants, so naturally we go there frequently to eat. The owners wife is an artist, and she does amazing paintings which I love to check out. She's done a great series on mermaids, and when I'm rich and famous, I intend to buy one! If you're interested, check out Aquarium's link:

http://www.aquarium-grenada.com/

Well, you can be sure I'm not going to be done with the whole Caribbean sea/aquatic thing anytime soon! I'm just getting started and have only begun to flex my muscles. Grenada is gearing up to host some of my items at local boutiques, so I aim to impress! Plans for an amazing sea themed photo shoot are in the production phase.

This is such an amazing career to be undertaking, because I'm able to pull so many different talents together to make things work! Curly girl!
Why is it so hard to find people in the fashion industry who LOVE curly hair? I have lost count over the number of makeover shows featuring stylists brandishing flat irons. I have walked by numerous booths at the mall, staffed by eager sales associates, who eye up any hair with a whimper of a wave, and attempt to stamp it out of existence. Curly hair isn't always seen as pretty, and it makes me really frustrated.

I spent the majority of my life thinking I had horrible hair. I'd brush it out once it dried, and the most I could think to do with it was pull it back into a ponytail. I looked at my sleek straight haired friends and burned with envy. Unfortunatly, a former stylist of mine used to help feed my negative self image. My hair was permanently straightened, many years ago at his salon, and after examining it he said "It's a good thing you're doing this, because you really have horrible hair." He even took pictures of my hair, so we could all re-live the dramatic before and after transformation. I paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to keept it straight, and purchased a slew of top of the line hot styling tools, just so I'd look more mainstream. After all, if my natural hair was horrible, how could bear it?

My salvation came oddly enough through my mother. She was at the Woman's Show in Toronto many years ago, and there was a stlist there who specialized in curly hair. My mom always wore her hair short, and teased out (blech!) and he took her sorry curls, and with a new technique, and the right products, he turned her hair into magic. Instead of poof and frizz, she had glorious curls! S he kept going to his salon every few months, and gradually grew out her hair. It looked amazing the longer it got. I was watching her go through this process, and I was amazed. Seeing her success made me wish that I had curls to work with also. (At this point, I only thought my hair was wavy.)

One day I found myself calling up this salon, to see if he'd help me style my waves. I was nervous (I didn't want ANOTHER person telling me I had horrible hair), but determined. What I discovered that day was amazing. I was still growing out some permanent straightening I had done, but they were able to work with what was left and show me what my hair was really capable of. My curls were a bit limp because the majority of my hair had been straightened, but the roots had serious promise, so I was encouraged.

I focused on growing out my hair and going in for frequent trims to keep it healthy. Before I knew it all the processed hair was gone, and I was back to the natural me. That was 3.5 years ago. I now know what products curly hair should avoid (anything with silicone in is a major NO), and better yet...what products my hair loves. I learned how to style curly hair too, which is really important. It's so easy, and takes me minutes a a day. Now, I get compliments on my hair all the time. I run into numerous people who come up to me to say they love their hair, and wish their frizz could look like this. I tell everyone that it CAN! (See the picture below. That's my hair before all this happened.)

What kills me is that most of the women who come up to me DO have hair that has major potential. They just haven't learned how to manage it yet. It's because society right now has tunnel vision, and straight hair has become the be all and end all. The majorit of hair stylist out there have no clue what to do with a mass of curly hair. ALL my former stylists used to flat iron mine, and then cut it as if it were straight hair. Naturally my hair would look really weird if I did attempt to forgo the flat iron for the day.

Well I'm not buying into it the whole straight hair thing anymore. Being me has never felt better. It costs much less money, is saving me considerable time, and I get more compliments now than I ever did with straight hair.

If anyone out there has gone through a similar situation, I strongly recommend you check out this forum:

http://www.naturallycurly.com/ I found the people there a HUGE support. I learned a lot, and discovered some additional techniques and products that my new stylist didn't recommend, but that are really working for me. If you're in Toronto, and would love to learn how to get amazing curly hair, check out my stylist. His name is Jonathan Torch. His website is http://www.frizzoff.com/ He is so passionate about curly hair, and I always feel amazing after leaving his salon. He understands how to properly cut curls (very few stylists do), and he has develped some great products for curls. (My favorite product of his is a runny liquid gel called Curl Keeper. It works miracles, and gives curly girls amazing shine!)

Another tip is to check out this book by Loraine Massey called "Curly Girl". Loraine has another technique for working with curls that works well for a LOT of people.

Anyway, I hope this little blurb helps anyone out there who is struggling with their natural hair! Curls can be gorgeous, so love what you were born with, and hold your head up high!MeghanThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03503324006495248727noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474089778782141887.post-38208233688228753142008-10-18T09:47:00.000-07:002008-10-18T11:17:42.763-07:00Thirst - Themed Earrings

These have been getting a lot of attention online recently. I found out today that they're being featured in a blood themed treasury on Etsy.com, so I'm thrilled!

Check them out at my store: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=15991967

When I first started working out the design for these beauties, I was definitely inspired by sinister Halloween imagery. Tired of the standard ghosts, skeletons, and pumpkins I'd spy hanging off ear wires, I was determined to create something unique. I wanted my creation to touch upon the Halloween theme, but also remain classic enough to stand alone and be worn all year long. What's the point in investing in something so luxurious that has limited usage?

Visions of vampires, and Gothic motifs guided my imagination. I found a gorgeous chandelier type earring emerging, that was dripping with rubies, sapphires, and a large quartz briolette. (The quartz looks red in the picture, but it's actually perfectly clear. A real gorgeous cut of crystal.) Once I oxidized the sterling silver metal, the piece finally came alive.

As I made these earrings, a vision of the woman who would wear them emerged.

A scene unfolded in my mind, featuring a sultry female vampire. This woman would prowl dark alleys at night, draped in luxurious gems and clothes, in order to entice unsuspecting human prey. Similar to a venus fly trap, her victim would creep up to her in curiosity, in order to get a better look. Suddenly she'd attack, clamping down on them with white pointy teeth, draining them dry, and they'd be doomed. Gliding back to her darkened apartment, she'd gingerly wipe her blood covered mouth off with the back of her hand, take off her earrings, and flick them onto her counter. Blood would splatter everywhere, and that's when I'd take my picture of these earrings at the scene (see above). What else was I to call them but "Thirst".

Enjoy!

MeghanThttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03503324006495248727noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6474089778782141887.post-675346618367492162008-10-14T21:31:00.000-07:002008-10-14T21:44:23.437-07:00In the beginning...Yay!

I made the leap and now I'm an official blogger.
